A Week´s Worth of Experience |

Just took delivery of an 8-ball Monday and have about 400 miles on it. First unhappy experience was with Progressive. They wanted $438 additional to insure it, over my 2005 Kingpin. Had to talk to a supervisor to get it down to a reasonable number. Had the dealer install a number of options to make this bare-bones bike more useable--including back rest and luggage rack, HID, power windshield, cruise control and lower wings. Still waiting for the HIDS and cruise control, a bit of a disappointment. I had ridden an 8-ball twice before purchase so I knew what I was getting. The riding position, as noted by Billy Bartels in Motorcycle Cruiser, is wonderful. You sit in the bike. behind exceptional wind protection, with a very low center of gravity. This 800 pound bike handles more like a 600 pound. The tip-over bumpers are an added plus. Plenty of power and a 6-speed. Sometimes rougher than I would like but still breaking it in. There is a wonderful sweet spot around 2500 rpm. Road my other bike, a Kawasaki 1600, and it shocked me by how little wind protection it had with both windshield and lowers, by comparison, and how high I rode. Victory has simply hit it out of the park in terms of riding position. We´ll see if it becomes a little smoother as it breaks in. The demo bike I rode was quite smooth, with perhaps 800 miles on it. Mileage is as good as my Kingpin, or better, with better performance. It is true the bags don´t hold much, but I simply added a piece of vinyl luggage to put on the rack when we travel further from home. I have never liked the top luggage on the regular Vision. The information available in the dash is fantastic and you can flip through it with a switch on the left. For example, it gives not only mileage but range. Temperature and time are always displayed on the dash. Yet it is clean and uncluttered, and still elegant. Harley and Star could take a lesson. Dealers will sell this bike for $16,800 or better if you ask around and you get a $1K coupon for doing a test ride with the traveling Victory show, for a total of $15,800, which is a great deal on such a fine, comfortable bike with such great handling. Highly recommended. |
