oil light?

Just got a 1993 klx650, and really like it. Recently noticed that despite the oil being topped up the red light with the thermometer (which generally refers to water temp) stays lit. I don´t have a repair manual yet, seems to run fine. Is this common in an older bike like this? Allen in Vermont
