Electrical shuts down when hit stat button??

I have a 2000 Honda Shadow VLX 600. I have checked the battery and it has 12.55 Volts, but when I turn on the key, the power and lights come on. When I hit the starter button, ALL POWER SHUTS OFF. It may not work for some time,sometimes I can mess with the starter relay and the power comes back on (sometimes). I replaced the relay with a new one, with no change. No fuses are blown, including on the relay. Could it be the starter? Do I have a direct short somewhere that occurred suddenly? It worked great since I bought it 3 years ago until the end of fall 2014. I had to jump it at work, and it barely started then, but as long as it was running there were no issues until I turned it off. PLEASE HELP so I can be ready to ride in the spring.
