Too big?

I am a beginner rider having just completed safety course for M1 exit. I am looking at the shadow for my first bike. I have also looked at the yamaha v star 650. Some say that starting with the 250 rebel, I will grow out of it too fast. Any ideas as to whether I should then go with the shadow.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
