I just finished working through a major set of problems with my 1983 shadow that might help others. First off when I tried to start it it would turn over a little then make a terrible clacking sound. It was a bad starter clutch in spite of comments from others that they never go out. i put a used one in and it solved the problem fine.Problem#2 after I put it back together it shifted into first fine but wouldn´t shift out of first.after much research and head banging I took thecover on the other side off (right) to check out the shift mechanism. There are 3 teeth on the right side shaft and 2 teeth on the left side shaft that comes from the foot shift lever. The 3 tooth tog on the right side shaft that operates the shift drum etc is spot welded to the shaft in 4 places and they had come apart so no matter how many times I realigned the two togs with the teeth it would shift by hand once or twice ok then stop again. Luckily you can pull the right sided shaft out without much effort and normally the three tooth tog would still be on the shaft but mine fell of inside the bike and was retrieved with a magnet. I figured out how it had been aligned before by visualizingthe spot welds and then welded it back together very carefully from the outside of the tog to the shaft and ground it down so it wouldn´t interfere with anything else, put it back in and it worked perfect. I really thought that was going to have to split the cases and since it ran fine I did not want to do that. Problem 3 After starting and driving the bike 10 miles or so I shut it off and when I tried ti restart it the lights dimmed and it would barely turn over. The battery ground at the block was slightly corroded and heating up. I cleaned it off , put the bolt back and the problem was solved. I am now much more knowledgable about this bike but its running great and with the sixth overdrive gear its a joy to ride on the highway! email me with any related questions. Mrh |
