Had a Honda 150 many years ago. Same problem. I have a new Rebel 250. Same problem. I learned 40 years ago on the 150 to go to Neutral from 2nd grear. Going from first to neutral you almost overshoot neutral and go right into 2nd. Get used to going from 2nd to neutral, which this bike seems to like much better.
