I too had problems while taking my brc class with the rebel. I still want one but as you stated about going from 1st to neutral is true. Every time I stopped I had to shut off the engine off then put the gear in neutral.while I ride it stays in 1st in case of an idiot behind me and i have to pull off asap.maybe contacting honda sounds good.
