Starter Problems

I recently, bought an 83 Silvwerwing Interstate with just 12k miles on it. Sadly, it´s been a hard starter complete with a big metalic "bang" during the process. Finally the starter only zings and sings and does not turn the engine. How difficult is it to repair this starter malfunction? Tips for good repair manuals? And, how the heck do you get the back seat to lift up?
