Even today, very few current custom bikes have more torque, HP and better comfort and handling and decent brakes like the GL1100, especially if passenger comfort is important as opposed to a sport bike. On a sport bike, your passenger may enjoy exposing curves while the drivers enjoys them tight. Handling of a limo with a sportscar can´t be compared. I have indeed noticed similar handling limitations with a stock GL1100 interstate 1982 (no fork brace or anything). I use Avon tires (which must inflate 10-15 psi higher than OEM) because just about anything is better than their OEM Dunlops. Steering is a little easier. Remember that the GL1100 is about twice heavier than the Fireblade which offers considerably more power and torque. Low speed handling remains a weak point of nearly ALL customs and touring motorcycle, even the latest GW 1800 which is heavier than ever. I´m only surprised that you somewhat expected to get a Valkyrie out of an old GL1100 simply by upgrading suspension! I hope one day your may appreciate the simple comfort of a Wing again. |
