Hi. You don´t specify how far down the bike is stripped. On the assumption that it is stripped to the frame, and you have little or no mechanical background, you should start by taking the engine/transmission to a reputable shop, preferably one with experience working on GL´s. It will not be cheap, but you do not want to waste you´re valuble time assembling something only to have the job turn out questionable. While the engine is in the shop is your chance to remove the old paint and rust, while closely inspecting the frame for cracking, fatigue, rust perforation or anything else that may compromise you and your husbands safety on the road. Once you are confident with the frames integrity, you will want to have it properly prepped and painted. Whether you decide to do this yourself, or have a paint shop do it for you, it is advised that all parts you want painted that color, are done together to get a good color match. Part of the job of restoring is laborously inspecting parts one by one, and deciding whether to restore the part, or purchase a replacement. Parts such as control cables, brake lines, springs, seals, gaskets etc. should be replaced with new. Knowing exactly what is needed to do to restore any machine requires not only knowing the condition of the machine, but the level of perfection one is aiming for. My GL-1000, (´78) is in pieces as well. It started with a bad alternator stator, but once I had the motor out, (necessary to replace the alternator!) I could not stop. Now I don´t know whether to keep it stock, or to create a wicked custom. Of course my wife wants it kept as a stock full dresser, ´cause she doesn´t like riding on the back of my "little" bikes, (550 & 750). I just can´t help dreaming about a solo GL, with no bodywork, low seat, custom tank, supercharger etc. Anyways, I got a little off track, this is supposed to be about YOUR bike! Keep in touch, it´s good to hear from someone in the same perdicament as myself, with the exact same bike! (Is yours black?) When you do get it running, you will be riding one of the best bikes ever built. The latter years of goldwing are too big, and do not reflect the sporting qualities possessed by the GL-1000´s.
