RIght side exhaust clanging when engine is turning

Hello, recently purchased an 89 GB500 project- not running at a fair price. I have now cleaned the bike up, bled and adjusted the front brake caliper and a few other odds and ends. The engine will not start. So when using the kick starter (or electric start) the engine will spin and (I have the tappet adjusting covers off) on the right hand exhaust port, I will hear a metallic clack when the engine is turning over. Not sure at what cycle this occurs, my guess is when the valve is either opening or closing. Anyone have any ideas or seen/ heard this before? Thanx in advance
