Kick start my FT?

I have a weak starter, would like the comfort of a kickstarter for my primary starting method. I have heard that an XR or XL has the guts, and with a slight mod of the foot pegs and the right lever that swings clear of the exhaust it supposedly bolts right in and has an exsisting idler gear in the engine. Any advise?
