I had a similar question about the oil drain plug. I removed what appeared to be a drain plug (it was on the bottom of the crankcase) to no avail (the plug held a spring, brass rod, and plastic cap- maybe a sensor apparatus). The oil drain plug turns out to be a 7 mm allen bolt on the left hand side of the crackcase, near the bottom. The bolt on my 2001 is brass.
