Choke carbuerator problem

I´m working on a 1983 Honda CM250 motorcycle for a friend. I can get it started with the choke full out (butterfly fully closed)and it will continue to run but only if I leave the choke on. If I push the choke control in at all, the engine revs to high RPMs and dies. Can you suggest options to check, please. Thanks.
