I drove one of these for 13 years, from about 1983 to 1996. It was a 1966 model and ended up with 122,000 miles on it!! From about 96,000 onwards the damn thing broke my heart, mostly because of really poor quality parts from Honda themselves. And I had only rebuilt it at that mileage as a precaution against mechanical failure!!! The list of ill fitting/ poor quality parts includes, valve guides that did not fit, and torsion bars with forks that would not fit around the valve stems. Two of these torsion bars did not have properly treated springs, and after about 3000 miles the valves were not closing properly, causing the bike to hole a piston. I put the old ones back in and persevered for a few miles yet, but no longer had enough confidence in the bike to constantly rev it to the limit as before. The fun was gone, and when the carbs eventually started to break up, I gave up. Before that it was good cheap fun. Jap classic enthusiasts who, in my experience much prefer to polish than to ride, also put me off big time. |
