Out of Storage; Back into the Sun |

Due to a recent death in the family I have uncovered my ‘72 Honda CB350 twin from its 22 year hibernation. After sitting in storage for 22 years with a crankcase full of motor oil and the gas tank partially filled with the same, I am completely surprised that it looks almost like the day I wrapped it for storage. Before storing this bike I changed the fluids and over filled the crankcase. I emptied the gas tank and added motor oil to help prevent rust formation. Then with diligence, I sprayed everything down with silicone to help prevent oxidation and rust. Finally, I wrapped the bike in plastic and cotton to prevent surface dirt and water exposure. So, now I have a really nice looking bike that has not been run in 22 years and has a lot of old oil in its fuel system, what is the first step at waking this memory up? With just over 8k miles should I consider selling “as is”, or should I spend the time and money to get things running like they were back in 1984. Do you think I would be better off to sell this bike as an opportunity for someone to resurrect from its stored state, or as a fully functional road worthy vintage bike? Please express your opinions and help me decide what path to take. |
