You may need to replace the rectifier. (The orange fins behind the battery.) First, however, replace the OEM fuse and holder with an updated blade fuse holder. It is a quick fix involving minimal soldering. It may not solve the issue, but is an inexpensive (under $5) first step. Try finding a modern rectifier which is much smaller, more efficient, and runs cooler. Sometimes offered on eBay.
