How to get rid of the Linked Brake Gremlin. |

I found the”Big Brother Honda knows best” linked brakes to be an active menace. I had no idea just how bad it makes stopping the big beast. The entire system has 9 unoposed pistons, and nothing, nada; zilch is in any way "floating". Thr gremlin Honda hired to run the brakes steps in at the worst possible moments. I bough and put eight thousand miles on an 03 XX after I creamed a deer in Utah. By the time I wrapped, the suspension had deteriorated to pogo stick. I had wanted a XX ever since it’s introduction in 97. But when i bough mine the salesman told me it could be easily disabled- not so. There is absolutely no way to not utilize the system. The linkage continues even if you turn off the ignition. On a dirt road forget the brakes, you have no brakes, you have a derailing system. Use compression braking or just jump off and get it over with. Worst- Honda had been very busy making what was once a performance motorcycle into a couch. My trials with the XX eventually led me to open a motorcycle performance tuning center in December 2003; we do ecu mapping, brakes, chassis, and suspension setups. I make no attempt to salvage any part of the OEM system. Instead I offer four remedies to the linked brake gremlin. The simplest and least expensive is the Nissin 4 pot conversion mated to a KYB convention cartridge fork, the second, 6 pots with an inverted 44mm KYB (Ohlins R&T’s are 43mm). The OEM coffin master cylinder is adequate for the four pots- not optimal. For the 6 pots a minimum 3/4 (or 18x18 radial) master cylinder is required. The full Monte is a Gold Valved, titanium nitrided RC51 SP2 mated to Speliger 8 pots or Braking 6 pot endurance (read ROAD) brakes with Yoyodyne one piece brackets pinching Braking full floater wave rotors. Spring rates range from 80 NM for high speed touring, thru 85, 90, and 95 to 10NM for canyon carving. Both of the Top End Systems come with a Magura 20x19 radial pump. Before you even consider a front end solution follow Honda’s recommendation and drill a hole into the stock Showa rear shock and throw it away. Penske, While Power, Hyperpro, and Ohlins make replacements ranging from $550 to $2400, then the front end conversions cost $1100, $3000, and $6500 or $7500 (includes thumb rear brake actuation). It’s very easy to double or triple your investment on a XX. Add forged road wheels (900-3200), carbon fairing (1000-3000), ECU mapping (300-600), Titanium exhaust (TiForce-$2200), braded brake and clutch lines (Speliger linked- $550) $$$!!! The result is the most refined high speed turbine ride there is- a bike that eats Montana in a day. Expensive for sure, but how far does five, ten, or even a hundred thousand dollars take you when your busted up, unable to work? You don´t have to be a hotdog or a fool to get into extreme situations where you will need every bit of skill, experience, feedback from the lever, and some luck, to pass thru. As this is a big planet we don´t expect to lay hands on all Blackbirds. 80% of our business is sport bikes, and most are Italian at that. Our mission is to enhance the motorcycling experience and increase safety. We are more than happy to share our experience in bringing the dos exes to heal. Find us at www.2wheeltuning.com.
