| I run dampers on any bike I consider worth keeping. They are usually Ohlins on the road and Scott’s off the road. I wound up fitting a Hyperpro to my Blackbird. I´m very happy I was forced to give Hyperpro a try. I´ve got roughly a thousand miles of CA Hwy 2 (really crappy surface) on it and I like it more each time I take the bird out. Ohlins makes damper kits when they are simple and straightforward. Mounting a damper on the cbr11xx is an engineering Himalayas. Ohlins and Toby have part numbers- but nobody remembers ever seeing one. Only Hyperpro actually has kits out in the distribution channel. The mount is a marvel. It´s like a tree with two bells on it- to locate to on a fairing boss, and an engine mount. The damper body itself is a long body linear (c.16") two stage. It Works- makes the big Honda imperturbable. Should you decide to get one, pay attention to the adjustment routine. Crank it up to much it will turn your steering to lead when you hit crappy pavement. A damper is an expensive item. The true cost should be measured in terms of safety and recoverability- as in from a gravel in the road, end swapping, who you going to call, life saver. A buddy of mine never got around to taking the Scott’s he bought out of the box and mounting it on his KTM Duke. On the back roads to Santa Barbara he hit dirt tossed out on the highway from a turnout. The KTM tried to swap ends, he recovered, and flew over the highside. He’s a fantastic rider. I’ve seen him recover from much worse- but on well set up equipment. You might have guess what followed: He finally got around to mounting the Scott’s along with fifteen hundred dollars of crash parts. He had the time since he was no shape to ride for a month. On Boulder Mountain, near Capitol Reef National Park, I collided with a deer at over on hundred miles per hour. I should say I hit the critter. I only had enough delta v to hit it well, not enough to miss. I managed to catch it right on the headlight / fairing mount which crushed as I tore the deer into at least two large chunks. One of which folded the left handlebar to the width of my thumb from the tank. The point is I was running an Ohlins steering damper on my FZ1. It held- I did not go down. I went from 100+ to maybe 30 in a heartbeat. The armor in my leathers stamped into my meat. I reached over the front and grabbed the lit thing that turned out to be my gauges and rode the bike twenty-five miles into Torrey Utah. BMW was running one of their motarands, and four Riders of the Big Beasts adopted me. One was a nurse- he gave me a quick once over, then they put me to bed in my hotel. 48 hours later I was on the phone scheduling tows. I was on my way. That’s how I come to buy the Blackbird. I wanted something to finish my ride to Canada. A damper can save your life. Off subject:The swingarm strut is not on a par with the rest of the bird. Definitely low bid- it heats up and fades. I am considering Hyperpro for it´s replacement. Before the damper I would have fitted Ohlins without much thought. I´ll post what I learn. |
