Install Digital Gear Indicator on a Star 250

I started riding at 65 and I bought the 250 to learn on. Well hell, I love riding it. I decided I need a gear position indicator so I bought a universal type which is a simple counter. It appears I will have to fabricate an angle bracket to mount the hall effect sensors. Has anyone installed this type of gear indicating system on their 250? If so did you find a way to mount the sensors directly to the bike?
