First Add-ons for this bike |

OK, I´ll start this off. Just bought an ´09 DL1000 after researching the heck out of it. Get these add-ons as soon as possible, in this order of importance: (1) Engine guards (crash bars)-- Three or four makes out there, and each has good and less good points. I went with the Pat Walsh Designs bars + bash plate + oil cooler screen combo. Others look quite decent, too, however. The big point here is that this bike is tall. At some point it´s going to go over; I don´t mean in a road crash, but in your driveway at one or two mph when you´re not paying quite enough attention backing it up (that would be me), or when the kickstand punches through some soft asphalt (like the Harley guy I saw in a cafe parking lot one hot summer day; he was not happy to hear his heap o´ chrome apparently pass out and tip over as he was walking away, trust me). In any case, the engine guard will save you big bux if your Vee heels over. (2) Center stand (Suzuki´s is a wallet-numbing $239; try SW Motech -- brutally strong, works fine, costs significantly less. Some say the Motech has less ground clearance than the Suzuki stand; others say the Suzuki limits left turn lean. If I had to choose between those faults, I´ll take the vertical shortage any day vs. lean shortage. I can stand the rare rock bash, but having the stand jack your rear tire off the ground in a severe lean...not good. But this could be BS -- others say the Suzuki is fine in severe turns. Who knows. It was a money call for me, and I´m happy. (3) MadStad adjustable windshield mount -- The fact is, the windshield on this bike is very far forward of the rider and is a tiny-ass thing to boot, sort of a vestigial windscreen, so it just ends up producing nasty turbulence right where your head and upper body are. You can get an acceptable set-up by installing the MadStad and adjusting the stock screen so that it´s higher and lets air in underneath to kill the turbulence. Again, this is quite acceptable. But if you´re going to ride long distances, you´ll probably want to go with an aftermarket taller wider screen on that MadStad mount. Just saying. (4) Mirror extenders -- The fact is, unless your shoulders are about 12\ |
