headlamp issues

hi,
i started my ride home tonight and noticed i had very low light levels coming from my headlamp. the lamp was on full beam. i swithched down to dipped headlights and had a flood of light appear. Both bulbs in the lamp seem to be working fine but i´m baffled. any suggestions?
