Fuel leak

Hi there.
I have a 91 Yamaha TT350 and just replaced the fuel tap on the base of the plastic tank.
When it is all plumbed up again, it now sends fuel out of the middle breather pipe positioned under the seat.
How does this occur?
Can any one shed some light here....
