Voyager speedo problem

Hello all. I´m hoping I came to the right place to get some help. Last year I bought a beautiful 92 Voyager xii with about 42,000 miles on it. I thought maybe the speedometer broke because it quit working so I bought a speedometer on Ebay. I just installed it and no go. I made sure the cable spun by riding the bike and holding the cable. It spun, but if I pinch the cable, it stops spinning and it doesn´t take a lot of pressure to get it to quit spinning. Does anyone have guess as to what my problem might be? The cable itself is in great shape and doesn´t look like it´s stripped or broke in anyway.
