Bill, I have a red 1985 ZL900 bought new in 85. I have gone all over the U.S.A. on it . 66,000 miles on the clock. the bike runs better then when I bought it. Here are some reasons. 1. Replace the stock coils with Accel coils and wires. 2 . Replace the stock advancer plate with a Vance /Himes plate. 3. Use Valoline Synth. gear oil in the rear hub gear assembly. 4. use 10w40 full synth. oil in the motor, change it at the end of each season. 5. replace the plactic fan blade with a Muzzy alum . one... 6. replace the stock cam chain tensionor with an after market mechanicial one., and adjust the valves every 7000 miles. 7. donĀ“t replace the airbox and dont re jet the carbs. 8. Buy a can of yamaha gas shock treatment at the dealership and run half of it in a full tank then repeat and go out on the open road while doing this , same day, then change the oil imediately. It will clean the whole inside of the engine....and carbs, 9. Put a 110 size tire on the front and a 170x15 on the back.10. Put foam handgrips on the bars and stainless steel lines one clutch and brake lines. 11. Ride the bike without thashing it ,,, I still have the original clutch and have never had the engine opened on mine. 12. I did have a company in Daytona refoam my stock seat which was great, before last years 5260mile ride to the West coast. I have also replaced the front fork springs with Progressive shorter springs which lowered the front end 2 inches. I am 62 years old and this will be my last bike. I use a tombstone windsheild on the bike when I go on trips. It takes the sail effect off the arms and chest. It is made by Slipsteam. I get most all my parts from Dennis Kirk . com .. Good luck on your project. It is my all time favorite bike and because it is differant and rare , it gets alot of looks. P.C.
