| Hey everyone, Thought I would weigh in with a few comments of my own about this great bike. I have had the 2006 Sprint for a year now and I love it. It flicks through twisties like a train on rails and is a beauty to tour on. It has a great panel display and back lighting. I ride with a pal that has the 2006 BMW R1200 ST and both bikes compliment each other in fuel distance, weight allowance and power. We´ve swapped bikes for a bit and we both agree that the BMW is a work horse and will outlast the Triumph, but mine is a helluva lot more fun to ride. I found mine in comparison to be better balanced, more nimble and agile. Riding positions were very silmilar, although the pegs on Triumph are slightly higher. In regards to engine and gear ratios, the Triumph is great in city as well as on the highway (it´s a 6 speed). I have outfitted the bike with the tank bag and side panniers. They hold enough gear for roughly four days (depending on what and how you pack) and if I need more room I strap a 50 litre duffle across the rear seat with a rain cover and I´m good to go with a few weeks of gear and tenting equipment. I have also outfitted my bike with the taller wind screen & handle bars with heated grips (It gets cold in Canada!). The riding position is much better with greatly reduced wind buffeting. I also strapped on a keyed helmet lock ($26 cdn) and it does the job just fine - better than the under the seat ones. I also added a throttle regulator (crusie control) that I bought from a South African outfit online. It´s awesome for my long distance rides - best thing I ever bought for my bike. I have now been able to ride my Triumph in every kind of weather, cold (to -15C), hot (+38C), rain and flooding rain (that was fun!),hail storms and snow (stock tires suck in even a little skiff of snow). MY only major issue with bike was when it got wet. I washed the bike and the signals stopped working- happened twice. I then went through a rain storm (water over the pegs) that flooded a lot of the city streets. I made it home, left the bike out in the rain overnight and drove it to work the next morning and parked in the underground garage. I was told the lights were still on later in the morning. I thought impossible - lights can only be on when the key is in. I checked on my bike a while later and it was dead. Nothing. I tried bump starting it. Nothing. I tried car boosting it. Nothing. The battery was done. It was diagnosed as the signal lights ground was shorting causing the battery to be cooked. My guess is that the ground wasn´t attached properly and when it got wet it arced causing the battery to fail. I was told this occurs with the unfaired Triumphs and that techs usually tighten the grounds (located in the front of the bike) during the 1000km service, but because my bike is faired they never bothered checking because the presumed everything is protected by the fairing. My only gripes, which are more creature comforts than anything, are 1. Panniers can´t fit a helmet in them 2. Tank bag rain cover sucks. Hard to get on and off- why didn´t they make the abg water proof or put a dry sack inside? 3. No adjustable pegs. I hope that gave everyone some insight on the incredible bike that is the ´06 Triumph Sprint ST ABS. Ride Safe and keep the rubber side down! |
