I´m a long term biker, now 44 and started on a Yamaha FS1E in 1978. I´ve had a lot of bikes from 50cc to 850cc and I´m an advanced rider. I´ve had 500cc mopeds, road bikes, dirt bikes, trials bikes, tourers and superbikes (bikes over 750cc that were fast in their day!). I had 4 at once, once - all different and I currently have a Chinese 200cc Honda 125 copy trials bike because it only cost me £800 new!
My question is, having not really ridden modern era bikes from about 1985 onwards, I´m looking for a single bike that gives me a bit of everything. I like the fun of a trials bike (don´t need too much off road), the pleasure of touring and cruising at speed 2 up with luggage, the enjoyment of commuting past cars to work and the thrill of a bit of speed occasionally. I have a car too which I need for a baby on the way and I´m not a die hard biker.
Wanting to spend between £2000 and £3500. I think what I need has to be the adventure type bikes (like the Transalp/Paris Dakar style) rather than a sports tourer (like the old CBR600/1000). The bigger the thirstier I guess, but I´ll brunt it as it needs to be/do everything. I realize I won´t squeeze it through any pinholes.
So far it´s the Suzuki V Strom 1000 Grand Tourer - looks great!) and the uglier Honda XL1000, with a Yamaha TDM and the BMW (and the KLR?) as competitors.
Any advice/experience to pass on?
Thanks,
Steve
