K&N air filter

i have just bought a K&N bfilter and i tried to fit it today but when i took the old filter off there were 2 pipes to put it on 1 enters the back of the air filter and 1 enters the front but i put t on 1 to see what it sounded like but the mt prd stoped starting which i can fix but i dont know which pipe to put it on?
please help
