Well, obviously, I´ve not gotten the ´05 model yet, but the ´02 LC4 would run on the highway "plenty fast´ even after I geared it down. I used it for several trips to the Copper Canyon area in Chihuahua, Mexico. I did the kind of riding on that bike that you describe and found it to be, basically, perfect. The engine has so much torque that one needs attentive to throttle control...simply to modulate rear wheel spin. I wore out a brand new Dunlop 739 AT in about 400 just by being a bit heavy handed and was concerned that I wouldn´t make it back before it ´popped´. Granted the rally bikes would be set up differently and, no doubt, have some "one off" parts on´em, but, in the Dakar for example, they (admittedly some of the best riders on the planet) ride those bikes through some pretty amazing terrain with 11-12 gallons of gas on board.
