Hi friend,
Actually the 500 Vulcan will be better maintenance-wise than the other two you mentioned. Here´s why: The other two bikes are air cooled, the Vulcan is liquid cooled, which is better for longevity. It doesn´t have to work as hard, even though the engine is a little smaller. Plus, the Vulcan has 6 speeds, the Honda only has 4 and the Yamaha has 5. With a 6 speed, you are turning lower revs at cruising speeds. All this translates to longer engine life and less maintenance. All you have to do on the 500 is adjust valves every 6000 miles, adjust chain, and change oil. That´s it. You have to do all that stuff on the other two as well. You have to adjust valves and chain on the Honda and valves on the Yamaha, but no chain on it. So it´s an even score on maintenance. Plus the 500 will absolutely bury those two bikes in a drag race or even just cruising at 70. The 500 has 50 HP and is high tech, proven, has 4 valve heads and is counterbalanced. The other two are dinosaur V Twins. The Vulcan will run 90 mph in the 1/4 (right with a 1500 Vulcan), the Honda does 72 if you´re lucky, and the 650 Yamaha turns 79 mph. The latter two are straining to go 70, but the 500 is very happy. I know of one 500 Vulcan that has over 92,000 on it and the engine has never been apart. They are not throwaway bikes. Enjoy - hope this helps.
