I Belive you have a sound plan mike. i just bought mine this last saturday and am neering 500 miles (488 actual) i looked at the sticker on the tach, it´s identical to the one for a 2005 KLR650. I believe you need to break in an engine for how you plan to drive it. lugging is bad, keep load on the engine(rev, shift rev, shift and so on) i would avoid going 8000RPM the first 350-400 miles, but the main thing is to be working the engine hard(avoiding lugging)very winding roads, in town rpm´s and speedo constandly going up and down. Here is what i do Know: If you baby it, You will have a pooch. if you over rev it you make junk. i now it´s hard but a hard work out is just as good for you as it will be for the bike. oh, one more thing 0-300 miles is to soon to see top speed, and it´s too soon for the engine as well.
