Two dealerships have stressed to me the need to follow the book, but it just isn´t practical or safe, and in my opinion it´s unnecessarily conservative for a high quality engine, so I´m following my own plan with a new 2005 that I´m breaking in for my daughter. The book says to keep it under 4000 rpm for the first 500 miles, and then under 6000 rpm for the next 500 miles. 4000rpm in sixth is only 30 mph, which will get you run over for sure where I live. To prevent that from happening, I run it up to 5500 rpm (45 mph in sixth) as required to get out of the way of the soccer moms and their big cages, and I´m also careful not to lug it at low rpm´s or run at steady speeds. Once I hit 500 miles, I´ll change the oil and start letting it out to 7000 rpm as needed to get out of harms way. Basically taking it pretty easy until 1000 miles or so. To me, common sense makes much more sense than the book.
