I also just bought an 01 650 from a friend and have the same question. I only hear the whine in 5th gear. From looking around at other sites it sounds like this is a normal thing for vstars but I would like to hear from someone with more experience to know for sure. I really don´t want to take it in to the dealer if there is no problem.
