Front tire

Was wondering if anyone has noticed the K1200gt eating up perfectly good brand new lookin tires. I recently purchased a bmw motorcycle from its previous owner. When I test rode it, I noticed it took a bit of muscle to steer. I thought it was normal for this bike, it being a heavy bike. Later, after I purchased it, I noticed when riding with both hands on the grips, I had to push on the left grip, and pull on the right to keep it going straight down the road. I thought, we´ll maybe something is wrong with the bike? Then I did some checking on the net. The most common cause is tire wear, and sure enough, when I double checked the front tire it was wore almost flat on the left side. Almost as if someone took the bike through a bunch of sharp left hand turns at high speed and just completely shredded one side of the tire. Well, I´m not sure if this is what caused the tire to wear funny, but I´m hoping it is. Cause if not, that means there´s a costly repair lurking somewhere behind this uneven tire wear. I´ve ordered a new tire, a Dunlop Roadsmart II. I realize I probably didn´t order the best choice in tire for this bike, however, it was the best price on a name brand I recognized...and since I´m not sure yet about why the P.O. went through what appeared to be an almost new tire that way. I figured I would just get a cheap tire and put it on and see what happens... I´m a slow, careful rider, so even if the bike can do it...I won´t be carving up the twisties with any great speed. I figure with me riding it, if the tire wears like that again, there must be an alignment issue somewhere. Can anyone offer any pearls of wisdom?
What´s the best front tire for mileage, I´m not a knee scraper, so I don´t need the stickiest tire on the planet. I just want something that does its job, and lasts more than 10k miles. Which is about what this tire I´m replacing appears to have on it. Good tread, and almost like new on one side, the other, completely shredded flat!
