I´ve got the Kawasaki VN800 twin. On the test ride with a bike that had pipes it did 40-130km in third gear. Mine probably peaks at 125 km with factory pipes in third gear. 130 kmh = 81 mph. I used third to test the engine, because in fifth gear you´d be way illegal. It accellerates usefully from 40 kmh in third, too; so handy torque range for blocked up city driving. The Volusia is reportedly slightly higher geared than the Kawasaki. Good for cruising, and probably a bit less accelleration than the VN800. I don´t generally drive over 120 kmh, as the limit here in Melbourne is 100 kmh. The engine´s just pottering along in 5th gear at that speed, with plenty of reserve for overtaking. My last bike (Yamaha Verago 535 cc V-twin)had a shaft drive, and did one female drive gear (rear hub, $A45 part in 1995)in the 152,000 km it lasted before a big end bearing failed. Check the dif oil every few years was about all the maintenance needed. It was 6-8" narrower at the handle bars than my current VN800, which worked much better zipping up the middle in clogged up freeway traffic. The VN800 has chain drive, but gets about 15% better fuel economy and better accelleration than the VL800. The VN is a bit narrower (2-4")and shorter (5 or 6"), which makes it easier to manouver in traffic, sidewalk parking, etc. The VL had 2-3L more fuel tank capacity (about 15L vs 18L). My VN was $A1400 cheaper than the VL new, which clinched the decision for me. I had a chain oiler fitted ($A150-200), to compensate for lack of shaft drive (which I rather wanted). Good cruising. |
