Having Problems with battery.

i seem to be having a couple of problems with my bike.
1st problem is, when im sitting at a stop light or come to a complete stop and try and take off, at first when your revving up the enigine and releasing the clutch at the same time i hear a crunching sound, sounds like it has something to do with the chain. almost like when your chain almost pops off when your on a real bicycle.
2nd problem now is, i left my ignition on for 2 hours because there was an emergency and i just hoped off my bike and forgot about it. Now it wont start and my battery is dead. i push started the bike and in neutral it idles just fine, but when i try to give it gas it cuts out, ive had smaller bikes before that you could push start and the battery would charge itself after you ride it for a while. i took it our for a spin and it was brutal it keeps cutting out and stalling and backfiring, like one engine is firing and the other is not and is trying too.. when idling, the brake lights and turn signals work and the horn, but very weak. when i take off and try to ride, they do not work at all.... whats wrong? do i need to have the battery charged or am i looking at buying a new battery?

i drive a honda shadow, vlx 600, 2004.
