I had the same thing happen on my VT600. On mine (1997) there is a large amount of wiring under the front steering covers. After foolishly paying a mechanic a bunch of money for a voltage regulator and taking it out and having it happen again, I decided to take matters into my own hands. If you have a volt meter you can check down the circuit to the fuse box when your ignition is on. I found a short in all of the wiring in the steering area by relieving all the wiring from clamps etc and then trying it. It worked, so I began to reattach everything, trying the the brake light each time and as I put it back I found the cluster that was shorting because when I reattached it to holding clamp it shorted and blew the fuse. Walla, I just seperated the wires in the loom and found it easily with a voltmeter. Be Careful. There are lot´s of scam artists out there that will try to take you for $350 for a simple fix that you could do yourself. Get a manual for your bike. Find the fuse box and replace the blown fuse first thing. If it blows immediately again when turning ignition the short is still happening. If it doesn´t take it for a spin and see if the fuse blows. If it does then it is shorting in your wiring harness in your steering most likely because when you are turning the bike it is causing the short. Sitting still it doesn´t. Let me know how it goes.
