my new bike arrives this saturday 10th july 2004

i have just sat my refresher so i can use the gears on my new daystar but when i went into the shop again yesterday noticed the gears on the left are different ie there is a back gear thing aswell could anyone please explain how to use these kind of gears as i dont want to look a total idiot when i go to pick it up any info would be really helpful thanks a lot mandy
