Forgot I posted some pre-purchase comments on this bike. So after two years and 4500 miles or so of ownership here are my observations: 1) Character - oodles. Never thought when I bought the bike just what a conversation piece it would be. Just about every time I stop at a bike meet others make a bee-line for the bike and want to know all about it. Mine´s got a 3X custom black with red metalflake paint job though (from new) - that makes a difference I think from the flat red or dusty orange factory supply ones. But still just so different from just about everything else out there. A mate of mine has a beautiful (if brutal!!) looking grey and orange Buell Cyclone but the poor bloke just can´t understand why everyone ignores his bike when we go out, and instead just want to know about mine!! Strange but true. 2) Ride quality and handling. Not bad although forks are non-adjustable and quite harsh. Our roads (Isle of Wight)are bloody awful so anything other than an off road/supermoto/BMW(!!)will struggle here. When they roads are better it´s great and can be really chucked around with confidence. 3) Comfort - excellent for an unfaired bike. Seat is quite firm, but doesn´t get any worse with longer stints. 4) Reliability - 100%. Build quality is really very good and it as that solid never-let-you-down feel to it. 5) Performance - only what you´d expect from a low power but quite high torque engine - 5th gear overtakes are pretty good, and lowish speed ones (ie below 50mph) are very good. It´s when I´m really cracking on at the upper end (70-80-90 sorry officer!) that it struggles. I imagine top wack is little more than 110mph. Back tyre is ready for replacing now - surprised given the lack of power, but perhaps shows what fun the bike is in the twisties!! Same rate as my old 1200 Bandit. 6) Brakes - dinner plate sized Grimeca´s at the front with standard braided hoses.Excellent feel and power. 6) Practical touches are few - no under seat storage, no bungee hooks and basic instruments. But headlights are very good, and it has shaft drive - I´m a real convert as I just never notice the difference to a chain, except no adjustment, no gunky back end, no chain slack=poor gear change!!! 7) Suzuki VX/Marauder/Intruder engine, so parts should be fine. Excellent gearbox - slick and no loud clunks. 8) Accessories - probably the biggest issue for me as I´d love to get some fruity pipes and maybe improve the suspension - none appear to cover this bike. If you wanted a top box or hard pannier set, they were made for the Scahs 800 Roadster but no longer available which is a shame. Bear that in mind - if you need luggage I think this will be difficult unless you get something made up yourself. So, should you buy one? Now this is the tricky one. There really isn´t a duff big(ish) bike out there these days, and I´m sure if you tested one of these and then say a Bandit/Hornet/Fazer, it would be at the bottom of the pile. BUT, if you´re not one to follow the crowd and want something that bit different then yes, go for it. I´m glad I did, and am not at all disappointed. I´ve added my e-mail address as I´d love to hear from any other owners out there. |
