Reserve Fuel Tank Doesn´t Work

Just bought my 2001 VMAX - Love it but I run out of gas at about 80 miles, and my reserve switch doesn´t seem to work. I figure I´m getting about 25 mpg for the 3 gallons I have before the thermo-switch in the tank detects that I´m on my last (reserve) gallon. Sure could use that extra 25-30 miles but it seems, from what I´ve read - when the thermo-switch goes dry it shuts off the fuel pump. Then, when you switch to reserve it SHOULD re-energize the fuel pump giving you access to the final 4th gallon. Any suggestions? I´ve checked the contacts and all seems well. Thanks.
