i own a 2002 r1 which is the same for 03. there are alot of factors that that determin the r1´s top speed on any given day. wind, type of fuel, amount of fuel and rider weight are some of the variables. this bike doesnt have ram air. on top end it doesnt seem to have anywhere near the torque of a kawasaki.the top end power is more linear. r1´s have very little in the way of wind protection so your body drag kills alot of top end speed. to answer your question in short i weigh 265lbs at 6ft tall and ive got 176mph on my stock 2002 r1 with stock gearing. what it lacks in some places it makes up for it in plenty of others. this bike isnt for a novice and in the right hands is alot of fun! ive owned or riden alot of sport bikes and im finally satisfied for now.....
