RPMs went from 5000 to 8000 what´s wrong?

I was riding my used bike that I purchased yesterday. It´s a 2003 Kawasaki ZR-7S with 16,000 Miles. I was going through the gears and shifting around 5000 rpm. I was in 3rd gear at 5500 rpm, and rpm just shot up to 7000-8000 rpms. What would cause this? Powerband? or slippage of chain or transmission.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks
