Counterbalanced? |

I´m pretty sure I´ll be buying a 2003 SV 1000 (non-S) tomorrow, seems like a lot of bike for the money. One thing puzzles me though: The test ride revealed a remarkably smooth engine, even at very low rpm. Having owned a Guzzi and a Ducati, I expected a good deal of low-rpm low-frequency satisfying rumbling vibration (particularly with full throttle), but nothing much at all. Why not? After all, this is a large-displacement 90 degree v-twin, and like other such engines it´s not counterbalanced, right? Or is it? My dealer tells me it *is* counterbalanced. That would account for the disappointing lack of "character" at low rpm, and yet when I read reviews or specifications, nothing I´ve seen ever indicates the presence of a counterbalancer (as opposed to reviews of, say, the 60-degree Aprilia engines, where there are invariably many references to the dual counterbalancers). So what´s the deal, SV 1000 counterbalanced or not? If not, why so smooth at low rpm? Is it because the computer is set to limit the intake to tiny amounts of mixture until higher rpms? Could this be remedied with a reprogrammed chip? Thanks. Philippe |
