OEM Clutch plate installation

OEM Clutch plate installation

I understand the last friction plate on a clutch installation must be “off-set”.
Is this by one tab/ notch? And is it the left or right?

Also, why is this required for the clutch to function?

I have a 2005 Boulevard c90T and am using OEM parts.
