Hi, I have a 800 sport since June 2003, bought new, it has now 25,000 kms (15,500 miles?). The only problem I had was a bad clutch slave cylinder whick had a leak after 8,000kms ; this is a known problem for this bike, though it doesn´t necessarily occur. But if it does, it´s under a life-time guarantee.
Didn´t have any problem since then.
A few things you need to know : this bike, like every Ducati, requires a very cautious break-in, and the regular maintenance MUST be respected (mandatory every 10,000kms - but an oil/filter change every 5,000kms is good). If you´re not a pig with your bike, you shouldn´t have any problem (problems with Ducati are prior to 1998 models).
I find 2,200 $ really cheap : what´s the mileage? Did your friend take real care of this bike?
Apart from that, it´s a real thrill to ride although I would not recommend it to start with as it demands good driving abilities.. (unless you intend to use it only on highways, which would be a waste..)
