Rear drive issues

I am a new BMW owner - purchased a 2002 R1150rt with 46000mi at 48000mi I took it in for a service an mechanic said my rear drive bearings were shot. They were replaced about 3 yrs ago. Is this something I will have to deal with every 3 yrs? Gonna take 6-7 wks and $1000
