Speedometer woes

While riding this weekend I looked down at my speedometer and noticed the indicator fluctuating wildly then coming to rest at 0 and staying. Every so often it would seem to give a proper speed read-out but then it would sink back to 0 and stay there. From what I could discern from a repair manuel the culpret could be a fautly sensor. If so I will just take it to my dealer for repair. Am I missing anything?
