Although the GS500 is a competent motorcycle, it is severely lacking in performance compared to other 500cc-600cc machines. Regardless of having an air-cooled engine, even for street reliability its compression ratio is unnecessarily low at 9.0 to one. Furthermore, the GS500 can easily be overbored to a larger displacement; 555cc big bore kits were previously available for it from Wiseco Piston Co. And Cometic Gaskets still lists cylinder head gaskets for the 555cc kit which uses 79.0mm-bore pistons, 5mm larger than OEM pistons. Additionally, 5th and 6th gear ratios for a stock GS500 are excessively high. Obviously most GS500 owners wonder why Suzuki Motors has not made any significant performance improvements in over ten years with this model aside from the 34mm carburators added for 2002.
