I took delivery of my V-Strom yesterday at lunch -- so far, I´ve managed about 160-180 km. I find this a very pleasant ride, and even though there´s still snow on the grass and gravel on the pavement (our city doesn´t use salt), it seems surefooted and smooth. Mine came with what appear to be H-rated tires, rather than the Z-rated tires so common of late. Even in the cold (hovering around the freezing mark), the tires are starting to scrub in and get some grip. Should be better soon. The bike doesn´t feel nearly as tall as it is -- the center of gravity and the polar moment of inertia are both low and centered. There´s no way you would mistake this for a crotch-rocket or a dirt-bike -- it has a character of its own that is becoming more and more obvious as I ride it. The motor is impressive even in break-in regimen -- at 3000 rpm, it has enough pull to leave most cars behind -- on 1/8th throttle! I´m anxious to see what happens when I can let it run itself out a bit! A final note -- despite a design that seems to draw the same love- hate reaction that some cars do (like my Lancia!), I have had numerous comments from car windows, fellow gasoline customers, and others that this is one sharp bike -- and one that will not be mistaken for anything else... As the owner of a Subaru Impreza rally car and a Lancia Zagato, I can´t ask for much more! |
