Help with MPG

My 2002 Suzuki VL800 only gets 27-29mpg. I do have a windshield but I don´t ride with a passenger or luggage and while I weigh 230#, I feel it should be doing better. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I need to do to get better mileage?
